Africa-Press – Namibia. Kunene region is one of Namibia’s fourteen regions, extending from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Angolan border in the north, named after the Kunene river.

Kunene is known for its expansive landscapes, dispersed settlements, and diverse cultural groups, including the Himba,

Damara and Nama communities. The region’s capital is Opuwo, and the current governor is Vipuakuje Muharukua.

Administratively, it encompasses the municipality of Outjo, the town of Khorixas, the autonomous village of Kamanjab and numerous smaller settlements, such as Otjomotjira. The 2023 Population and Housing Census states that Kunene has a population of 120 762, with most residents (66.3%) living in rural areas.

The region has a low population density of one person per square kilometre and a youthful population, with more than half aged between 15 and 59.

As of 2020, Kunene had 58 548 registered voters, reflecting its growing civic population.
