THE Namibian President, Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, has said that the Namibian and German governments are nearing a conclusion with regard to signing the joint declaration agreement, which recognises the genocide by Germany against the Nama and Ovaherero between 1884 and 1915 and provides for reparations.

The President made this announcement in her State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament.

“For a decade, the Namibian and German governments have been negotiating genocide, apology, and reparations for the 1904–1908 Ovaherero and Nama genocide. Through the steadfast commitment of our government, supported by the Cabinet Special Political Committee, the Chiefs Forum, and the Technical Committee, the Joint Declaration has been reviewed and will be tabled before the National Assembly prior to signing,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.

She added that a conclusion is now within reach, possibly before the year’s end.

“We count on our collective political will to close this dark chapter and begin the long-awaited process of healing,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.
