Nghimtina gets military farewell … Eenhana Shrine beckons

Africa-Press – Namibia. Namibia is preparing to bid farewell to one of its most distinguished sons, the late Erkki Nghimtina. A military funeral was confirmed by Ohangwena governor Kadiva Hamutumwa. A family member also confirmed that the Office of the President will be represented and senior government officials are expected to attend.

The burial will take place at the Eenhana Shrine on Saturday, a site that honours the country’s liberation heroes. Nghimtina, who passed away, died on 8 February 2026 at his homestead in Edundja village, in the Ohangwena region. He was 77 years old.

He was a towering figure in Namibia’s liberation struggle, entering exile with Swapo in 1974 and training abroad as a military radio specialist. After independence in 1990, he joined the Namibia Defence Force, rising to the rank of colonel before transitioning to politics. As a member of Parliament from 1995 to 2020, Nghimtina held several key Cabinet positions, including defence, mines and energy; works and transport; labour, industrial relations and employment creation.

Beyond his official roles, he was celebrated by his family for his peaceful nature, dedication as a breadwinner and unwavering support for his loved ones. One of his daughters, Ndaendelao Nghimtina, recounted how he always put his family first, serving as a strong pillar and a source of guidance and stability.

Fellow family member Kashuupulwa described him as a family man, supportive and peaceful, highlighting the personal side of a man often recognised for his public service. In the days leading up to the burial, memorial services will be held at his residence in Edundja, allowing community members, political leaders and family to pay their respects.
