The National Housing Enterprise (NHE) announced that it has set aside N$15.6 million towards the construction of 54 houses in Oshakati North (or popularly known as Ehenye).
Speaking during the ground-breaking ceremony last week, NHE’s manager for infrastructure and development, Indileni Set-Sam Iipinge, said the project, awarded to three contractors, is expected to be completed within five months-by 17 April 2026. He added that the development will create more than 100 jobs, providing a much-needed boost to local employment and the regional economy.
“This moment marks not just the start of a new development, but a continuation of NHE’s unwavering commitment to providing affordable housing to Namibians,” he said. Iipinge revealed that the houses will vary in size and type, ranging from 38m2 to 69m2, tailored to meet the needs of low-income families.
He added that since 2019, NHE completed the construction of 200 houses in Oshakati’s Ekuku township, at N$78 million.
“That milestone is part of a broader legacy of housing delivery in Oshakati, where NHE has developed multiple townships, now commonly referred to as NHE townships or simply NHE,” Iipinge said.
In addition to these 54 houses, Iipinge announced that on 15 May 2025, the Oshakati Town Council allocated Ompumbu Extension 3 to NHE, consisting 237 erven, of which 228 are zoned for single residential housing.
While in June, the Ongwediva Town Council also allocated 260 undeveloped single residential erven at Efidi Extension 6 to NHE.
“We are also working closely with the Ongwediva Town Council to consider applicants from their housing waiting list for this planned development in Efidi Extension 6,” he explained.
Iipinge confirmed that the 70 erven in Oshakati’s Ompumbu Extension 3, have been reserved for men and women in uniform, particularly from the police and army.
He further indicated that designs for bulk and internal municipal services for both Oshakati and Ongwediva are already at an advanced stage.
“Once the drawings are approved, servicing and construction will begin, covering a combined 488 erven, a significant step toward reducing the national housing backlog,” he explained.
“We are deeply grateful to the Oshakati Town Council for their continued support and for making available the land on which these 54 homes will be built. This partnership is a shining example of what can be achieved when local authorities and national institutions like NHE work together for the benefit of our people,” said Iipinge.
He used the opportunity to call on other local authorities across Namibia to follow Oshakati’s example and make land available to NHE for housing development.
