Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Omafo Private School in Helao Nafidi town, Ohangwena Region, has become one of the very few schools in the northern regions offering classes and training to children living with disabilities. Earlier this year, the school applied for and was granted permission to offer special classes to children living with any kind of disability.
According to the school principal, Grace Shapwa, the first enrollment involved thirteen children with a variety of impairments such as autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, speech impairments, and cerebral palsy, among others.
Before the Omafo Private School, only two other schools in the north — the Eluwa Special School at Ongwediva and the Usko Nghaamwa Special School at Eenhana — catered to children with disabilities.
The Omafo private school’s management said that the school has properly qualified teachers who are passionate about their job of caring for and teaching the children. However, parents contribute a “small amount” of N$500 per child per month, which is not enough to keep the school afloat. Therefore, more stakeholders, such as the local business sector and the health and education ministries, are urged to lend a helping hand.
The school is also in need of support from specialists such as psychotherapists, psychiatric therapists, and speech therapists to constantly monitor the progress of the children.
