Africa-Press – Namibia. LOCATED in the northern part of the country and declared a town council in 2011, the Oshikuku Town Council continues to make efforts to ensure the development of the town.

This commitment was evident with the recent handover of 219 houses to the town’s residents, ensuring that every inhabitant has decent shelter to call home.

Minister of Urban and Rural Development Erastus Uutoni said that the Council is on track in addressing the needs of the people and fostering development.

Uutoni noted that, in addition to advancing infrastructure development in the town, the council has also established a one-day market for local vendors, providing them with an open marketplace to conduct business and generate income.

In 2014, the construction of a modern market facility was completed, and a majority of street vendors relocated to this new facility. Initially, the construction was completed in 2013, but potential tenants requested several improvements before agreeing to move in.

The market comprises numerous open stalls and several rooms equipped with access to electricity, water, and sanitation. The market is expected to enhance safety and hygiene standards in Oshikuku’s trade sector.

Uutoni noted that, unlike some town councils where leadership disputes often take centre stage, the people of Oshikuku are focused on town development.

“People in Oshikuku have not let disputes obstruct progress; they are actively planning for the betterment of the town,” he said.

He added that in some areas, leadership disputes lead to less focus on town improvement planning.
