President appoints Mbambo

Africa-Press – Namibia. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has appointed Jonas Mbambo as the new Press Secretary and Presidential Spokesperson, marking a new chapter in the Presidency’s communications office.

The appointment is effective from 1 August 2025. Mbambo, a seasoned broadcaster and law graduate from the People’s Friendship University in Moscow, brings with him a rich blend of media experience and political insight.

He is well known in journalistic circles for his sharp analysis, calm delivery, and deep understanding of Namibia’s complex political landscape.

He takes over from Hengari, who has served in the demanding role for more than seven years.

The transition comes with warm words and mutual respect from both the Head of State and the outgoing spokesperson.

In a formal statement, President Nandi-Ndaitwah praised Mbambo’s credentials and expressed confidence in his ability to take on the high-pressure role of being the public voice of the Presidency.

“Mbambo brings to the Presidency a wealth of knowledge gained in media, particularly in broadcasting journalism,” she said. “He possesses strong analytical skills and a firm understanding of Namibia’s political environment.”

The President also took the opportunity to thank Hengari for his service and loyalty, stating:

“President Nandi-Ndaitwah extends her appreciation to (Alfredo) Hengari for his dedicated years of service during his tenure as Press Secretary and wishes him well in his future endeavours.”

Hengari, who took up the post in April 2018 under President Hage Geingob, is one of the longest-serving presidential spokespersons in Namibia’s history. Over his tenure, he served under three Heads of State — Geingob, Nangolo Mbumba, and now President Nandi-Ndaitwah.

In his farewell message, Hengari described the position as both demanding and deeply fulfilling.

“It has been an immense privilege to serve as spokesperson in the Presidency for the past seven years and five months,” he said. “During that period, I worked with three exceptional leaders of the Namibian people.”

He spoke fondly of each President’s leadership style and said what united them all was a strong work ethic and a deep commitment to justice and nation-building.

“I experienced different leadership styles, but they all share a profound commitment to hard work, an infectious love for the nation, and a passion for building a fair and just society.”

Reflecting on the road ahead, Hengari said he was optimistic about Namibia’s future under President Nandi-Ndaitwah, whom he described as energetic and focused.

“I leave the Presidency at a time of great hope for our nation, with a remarkable commitment and energy from President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to transform the socio-economic architecture of our country. I am confident that better days lie ahead for our people under her industrious leadership.”

He also shared parting thoughts on the role of the media in a democracy, citing former President Geingob’s reminder that the press should not be reduced to serving narrow or factional interests.

“President Geingob used to caution that the press should not become a lapdog serving factional interests but must remain a watchdog,” Hengari recalled. “President Nandi-Ndaitwah has also reminded the media that they are the fourth arm of government.”

He warned against the dangers of sensationalism and opinion-driven coverage, urging the media to remain committed to ethical journalism and public service.

“This implies heavy but crucial responsibilities that should not be dwarfed by opinion journalism or sensational reporting,” he said.

“There should be a commitment to a craft that can accompany Namibians positively on this transformational journey.”

According to Hengari, Mbambo now takes the baton at a critical time in the Presidency, as President Nandi-Ndaitwah continues to shape her administration’s direction. His first public engagements are expected in early August.

With both experience and trust on his side, Mbambo will be expected to continue strengthening the relationship between State House, the Namibian public, and the press.
