Africa-Press – Namibia. AS the festive season brings a surge in traffic on Namibian roads, road safety authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution and celebrate responsibly to prevent accidents and loss of life during the holidays.

In a festive message, the Roads Authority (RA) warned of increased vehicle volumes as holidaymakers travel, calling on all road users to drive with care, obey traffic rules and prioritise safety. The RA emphasised that arriving safely is the greatest gift motorists can give their families this Christmas.

Echoing the call, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah stressed that even a single road fatality is one too many. She urged Namibians to remain steadfast in their commitment to safe road use, obey speed limits, avoid drinking and driving, wear seatbelts at all times and stay alert while driving.

Motorists were reminded to buckle up, adhere to speed limits, keep vehicle lights on, avoid unsafe overtaking, take regular breaks and remain alert behind the wheel. The authority said collective responsibility is key to ensuring that families are reunited safely over the festive period.

The Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund of Namibia also reinforced the message, citing research showing that 72% of crashes on Namibian roads are caused by road user behaviour, including driving under the influence of alcohol, overloading and failure to use seatbelts.

MVA Fund chief executive officer Rosalia Martins-Hausiku appealed to all road users to adhere strictly to road rules and regulations, noting that responsible behaviour can significantly reduce accidents.

Both the Roads Authority (RA) and the MVA Fund extended festive greetings to Namibians, wishing them a Merry Christmas and Happy Family Day, while encouraging everyone to celebrate responsibly both on and off the roads.
