Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Round Table Walvis Bay 36 collected about N$80 000 during their Winter Knights drive, at Walvis Bay on Friday.
Group members and sponsors collected funds to buy warm items for the needy, on street corners between 06h00 to 08h00.
They collected about N$40 000 from street donations, while other residents deposited an additional N$40 000 into the organisation’s account.
“The idea started with South Africa’s round table. We noticed that some people were dying from the cold in winter, and decided to get money and blankets to keep them warm. We sold some corners to companies, and their employees stood there to collect money from motorists,” said Round Table Walvis Bay 36 international and public relations officer Leigh Westerdale.
The campaign was also held in other towns, including Windhoek and Swakopmund, and in South Africa.
Members of the public who would like to donate to the initiative, are urged to contact the Round Table.
