Africa-Press – Namibia. The Swakopmund Municipality has successfully risen above political interference and pressure, leading to meaningful development that continues to benefit both residents and the town’s economy.

This is the fervent position of CEO Archie Benjamin, who attributed their success largely to political maturity among councillors, who chose to put their differences aside in favour of the town’s greater good.

He said political stability and cooperation within the council have allowed the administration to focus on its core mandate – delivering services and improving the lives of residents.

“The political maturity shown by our councillors has been crucial over the years, not only this current council but over the years. We’ve had differences, but once council decisions are taken, everyone rallies behind the vision. That’s what has allowed Swakopmund to thrive,” Benjamin said.

The former teacher said the town has seen steady growth in terms of investment and urban expansion, especially in areas such as Matutura Extension 42, the newly proclaimed Extension 27 and the informal resettlement project in Mondesa. These are among several efforts aimed at addressing housing challenges and decongesting informal settlements.

“Despite constant pressure from different political sides, we focused on unity. We never allowed politics to divide our work. Our job is to serve the people of Swakopmund, and we take that seriously,” he explained.

He also praised the Swakopmund council for embracing inclusive governance.

He added that they all acknowledge the political differences in council, but their councillors have all shown willingness to work together.

“The town is bigger than our politics, and that mindset has helped us push through with key projects,” said Benjamin.

Meanwhile, he said the council will continue engaging stakeholders to accelerate housing delivery and improve informal settlement conditions. The town is also exploring innovative partnerships to fund infrastructure and boost local economic development.

Benjamin said Swakopmund’s example can be replicated across Namibia if other local authorities are willing to set aside their political differences. “It’s not about who’s in charge or what party you’re from. Once elected, we are there to serve. That’s what makes the difference,” he added.

Swakopmund’s current councillors are Blasius Goraseb, who serves as mayor; deputy mayor Suama Kautondokwa; and others, including Wilfried Groenewald.
