Africa-Press – Namibia. THE recommendations of the 5th Boundary Demarcation and Delimitation Commission (BDDC) for the creation of ten new constituencies by amending the boundaries of 61 constituencies will not affect the conduct of this year’s Regional Council and Local Authorities elections.

Peter Shaama, the ECN’s Chief Electoral and Referenda Officer, issued a statement Thursday reaffirming the ECN’s readiness to conduct the November elections and clarifying that both the Supplementary Registration of Voters (SRV), which is slated to take place countrywide from 4 to 19 August, and the actual voting on 26 November will be conducted in accordance with the current boundaries of regions, constituencies and local authorities as gazetted in August 2013.

The report of the Judge Petrus Unengu Commission, which was delivered to President Nangolo Mbumba in January, is still under consideration and is of no consequence to the impending elections.

Namibia currently has 14 regions, 121 constituencies and 57 local authorities.

The Unengu Commission decided against the creation of new regions, but proposed the creation of ten new constituencies, the adjustment of seven regional boundaries and 61 constituency boundaries, as well as the renaming of some constituencies.
