Africa-Press – Namibia. The Windhoek Municipal has approved a N$17 million project to upgrade streetlights in the central business district (CBD), a move aimed at revitalising the capital’s urban centre and improving public safety.
The project, funded through the city’s capital expenditure Capital Expenditure (Capex) budget, will be implemented over two to three financial years and will focus initially on key routes, including Independence Avenue, Sam Nujoma Drive, Post Street Mall and surrounding streets.
“To create a vibrant, safe and attractive environment that supports economic activity, social interaction and community pride, the Municipal Council of Windhoek has approved a transformative project to upgrade streetlights in the CBD. This marks the first phase of a broader initiative aimed at revitalising the city’s urban centre,” the council said.
The council said the current streetlights in the CBD are outdated and fall short of the functional and aesthetic standards expected of a modern capital.
