Africa-PressNamibia. OKAKARARA Golden Ladies will be hosting a women’s football tournament over the weekend at Grootfontein.

Tournament coordinator Wilson Nguvauva on Thursday said the tournament aims to develop women’s football in the Otjozondjupa and other regions. The tournament is organised by Okakarara Golden Ladies, a non-profit community-based team which aims to develop football in the Okakarara constituency and Namibia at large.

Nguvauva said although the team is based in the Otjozondjupa region, it is important to interact with other regions, like the Kavango East and Omusati regions. Nguvauva said scouts from national teams will attend the tournament to identify players for the women’s national team.

“We want to advocate for women’s football and give teams a chance to play in the tournament, and maybe some of the players will have the chance to be selected for the national team, because the woman super league is only concentrating on teams based in the central regions,” he said.

A total of 14 teams are expected to take part in the tournament that will be played at Omulunga Stadium from tomorrow until Saturday. Participating teams are from the Otjozondjupa, Kavango East, Omusati, Oshikoto and Omaheke regions.

The teams are as follows: Chelsea Football Club, Etosha Secondary School, Nampol, Gustav Kandji Secondary School, Okakarara Golden Ladies, Dynamos, Lyampingana Football Club, Okarui Young Ladies, Bufallo Horns Football Academy, Brave Heroes and Otjiwarongo Stars Academy.

Nguvauva said there will be no prizes for the winning teams, but there will be a floating trophy and medals. He said the organising committee is working around the clock to get a sponsor for the tournament.

“We have also taken the initiative and responsibility to plant trees at Grootfontein in conjuction with the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism, and the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service together with the municipality of Grootfontein, as well as the participating teams from the five regions” said Nguvauva. He said all Covid-19 regulations and protocols will be observed during the event.
