Africa-Press – Nigeria. Kebbi State has bolstered its security framework with the graduation of 819 National Forest Guards trained to protect forest reserves and curb criminal activities.
The guards completed an intensive nine-week training program in Kalgo Local Government Area, focusing on early warning systems, patrol operations, ambush tactics, and handling of AK-47 rifles.
Their training was jointly supervised by the Department of State Services, DSS, the Nigeria Police Force, and the military, reflecting a coordinated security effort.
Speaking at the ceremony on Saturday, Deputy Governor Umar Tafida urged communities and traditional rulers to collaborate with the newly trained personnel, emphasizing that local support is vital to combating banditry and forest-related crimes.
Representing the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, Commissioner of Police Umar Hadejia confirmed that the guards would be immediately deployed to vulnerable forest corridors and ungoverned areas.
Kebbi is one of seven states chosen for the pilot phase of the National Forest Guard initiative, with Arewa, Augie, Dandi, and Danko-Wasagu Local Government Areas earmarked for initial deployment.
Tafida noted that the forest guards would complement existing security formations and help prevent criminals from using forest reserves as hideouts or operational bases.
As deployment begins, residents are hopeful that the strengthened security presence will weaken bandit networks and restore safety to rural communities long threatened by criminal activities.
