Africa-Press – Nigeria. Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume has urged Nigerians not to allow religion to become a source of division.
He stressed that both Islam and Christianity preach kindness, patience, and mercy.
Ndume gave the charge during a Christmas luncheon organised for Christian Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Centre in Wulari Ward, Maiduguri, Borno State.
According to the senator, religion should never be used to separate people, noting that Nigerians share common hopes, fears, and aspirations irrespective of their faith.
“Religion should never stand between one human heart and another. We all breathe the same air, and our dreams are more alike than different,” Ndume said.
He warned that conflicts often thrive when people are reduced to labels rather than seen as fellow human beings, adding that those who manipulate religion for selfish interests do so out of fear of unity.
“No belief system asks us to hate our neighbour. Every major faith teaches kindness, patience, and mercy. Those who twist religion for personal gain are serving their own power, not God,” he stated.
The senator called on Nigerians to place humanity above religious differences in their daily interactions, noting that empathy and dialogue weaken the influence of those who benefit from division.
“Unity is not a sign of weakness. A society that stands together will always be stronger than one broken by fear. Humanity binds us more deeply than any difference we may carry,” he added.
