Africa-Press – Nigeria. Seasoned actor and author Flo Masebe is stepping into the shoes of Harriet Manamela and will star as Meike Maputla on SABC 1’s drama Skeem Saam.
The channel announced on Wednesday that Manamela will be absent from the show for a while due to ill-health.
Masebe will start appearing on the show on 15 May 2024.
Producers also said the character will be replaced by the end of season 12 due to unforeseen circumstances.
“The decision came about after Harriet Manamela needed to be placed on sick leave for an extended period of time. Manamela’s last scene for the season will air on 5 April 2024,” read the statement.
Masebe boasts a long CV with notable appearances on television shows like Soul City, Muvhango, Generations and most recently, Mzansi Magic’s The Republic.
In January, the popular drama introduced four new characters.
Nyaniso Dzedze, Pholoso Mohlala, Themba Manganyi, and Brendan Maphake were all announced as new additions expected to shake things up on the long-running show.
“This year brings dirty secrets bubbling to the surface, budding new relationships, a fallen star, and a high-speed car chase,” said a press release issued by production.
This is not the first time Skeem Saam gave a beloved character a new face. Last year, actor and dancer Hungani Ndlovu debuted as the prodigal Maputla son, Thabo.
Ndlovu was cast to take over the character of Thabo, popularly known as Tbose, from Cornet Mamabolo, who left the show in 2021.
In an interview with Kaya 959’s Tshegohaco Moagi, Ndlovu acknowledged there was a lot of pressure stepping into a recast role and complemented Mamabolo.
He said he was not trying to replace him, saying that the show’s storyline allowed him to create a new Tbose with which audiences and actors could engage.
