New Yam Festival Violence in Ondo Youths Attack Monarch

Africa-Press – Nigeria. The agrarian community of Idogun in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State was on Friday thrown into tension following an attack on the monarch of the community, the Onidogun of Idogun, Oba Moses Bakare, by youths in the town.

The wife of the monarch was also attacked and allegedly stripped half-naked, while the son of the traditional ruler, Prince Victor Bakare, was caught up in the mayhem.

According to sources, the incident occurred at Ishara Quarters of the community when Victor visited his parents to join them in the celebration of the New Yam festival.

While displaying bodily injuries inflicted on him by the irate youths, Victor stated that they were yet to fathom the reason behind the attack.

He said: “They attacked and humiliated our family. They stripped my mother half-naked, pouring urine and other filthy substances on me, and they physically assaulted the monarch.”

Oba Bakare, who described the incident as barbaric, said the assault was a continuation of “unprovoked hostility” from a faction of youths within the community.

The monarch commended the timely intervention of security operatives, stressing that their swift action prevented the unrest from escalating beyond what had happened.

Confirming the incident, the Amotekun Coordinator in the community, Omatayo Johnson, revealed that the prompt deployment of security personnel prevented the tension from degenerating into a wider crisis.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olayinka Ayanlade, stated that the case is currently under investigation, adding that the command is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that justice is served.
