Africa-Press – Nigeria. Chaos was averted by security agencies at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as anti-INEC and pro-INEC protesters almost clashed.

This was due to conflicting interests following the delisting of the David Mark-led National Working Committee, NWC, of the African Democratic Congress, ADC by the electoral umpire.

The two interest groups had planned to take their protests to the INEC headquarters which would have further heightened the tension in the area but only one group showed up due to the information that security personnel had been deployed to stop protesters from accessing the road to INEC office.

However, at about 11am, a protest broke out as some youths backing the decision taken by INEC stormed the area.

They asked those who feel that the decision of INEC does not favour them to go to court instead of picketing INEC office and creating chaos.

Addressing the press during the protest, on behalf of Concerned Nigerian Youth, Adeyeye Olugbenga, said they were against the move to occupy INEC by some mischievous persons.

“We observe that INEC as a law abiding agency, in compliance with the ruling of the court, have de-recognized the leadership of a party called ADC, and consequently upon that, instead of them, in case of any reservation, they are supposed to approach the court.

“They are beginning to launch all manners of disparaging and meaning attacks against the body that conducts our elections, which is INEC. We are conscious Nigerian youths, who are conscious of the essence of democracy.

“And I want to use this opportunity to encourage the leadership of INEC to continue with the upgrade.

“As Nigerian youth, we are conscious and we are vigilant that at any time that this enemies of Nigeria, who do not love peace, who are not conscious of the volatility of Nigerian security currently, want to come and distract INEC, either by way of picketing INEC office or by causing mayhem, consequent upon the compliance of the ruling of the court by the leadership of INEC, which is supposed to be applauded, we will continue to come out in our 1000s and hundreds to match up in support and in solidarity with INEC.”
