Africa-Press – Rwanda. APR basketball club are closer to securing the services of American guard Michael Dixon ahead of the much-anticipated 2024 Basketball Africa League-BAL.

The army side brought their 14-year title jinx to an end after a sweep over rivals Rwanda Energy Group (REG) in the finals to clinch the 2023 Rwanda Basketball League championship.

The champions booked their slot into the 2024 Basketball Africa League (BAL) season 4 and, according to the club management, star point guard Dixon is on their radar as a perfect fit to improve their current roster.

“We are in advanced talks with Dixon, and other players. Their presence would boost our chances of reaching far in the competition,” said Eric Kalisa Salongo, the club’s secretary general.

“Dixon was injured in the past days and we are looking to see if he is healthy when we start preparing, but we are still doing an assessment, because he is an addition every team would want to have,” he added.

With Dixon, a single-time champion of the BAL and MVP, Salongo argues that APR’s work is cut out.

Besides the BAL, the 32-year-old’s basketball journey has taken him to various leagues including Lietuvos krepšinio lyga, Czech National League, Greek Basket League, Turkish Basketball First League, Israeli Basketball Premier League, Lega Basket Serie A, and the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

“We have regular players in the team and those we plan to add, we plan to start preparations for the BAL on December 1, the group will be with their coach to start preparations.”
