Africa-Press – Rwanda. President Paul Kagame on Friday, July 11, met with former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, for a discussion on ongoing African-led efforts to restore peace in eastern DR Congo.
“Their discussions focused on the ongoing efforts to achieve durable peace in Eastern DRC and address the root causes of the conflict,” Village Urugwiro said in post on X.
Kenyatta is one of five facilitators of the EAC-SADC peace process. His meeting with Kagame comes just over two weeks after the visit by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is also on the panel of facilitators.
Efforts to restore peace in eastern DR Congo have gained momentum after Rwanda and DR Congo signed a peace agreement on June 27, following US-mediated negotiations.
The US-brokered agreement has drawing from the African-led initiatives for peace in DR Congo.
The Rwanda-DR Congo agreement that entails the neutralisation of the FDLR, a genocidal militia founded by remnants of the perpetrators of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, and the lifting of Rwanda’s defensive measures.
