Mining accident kills seven in Gakenke

Africa-Press – Rwanda. A mining accident in Gakenke District claimed the lives of seven people while three others were injured, on Friday, December 5, according to officials.

The accident occurred in a mining site in Gikingo Cell, Ruli Sector, where 72 workers were on duty at a mine run by COMIKAGI mining company.

Speaking to The New Times on Saturday, December 6, Inspector of Police (IP) Ignace Ngirabakunzu, the Northern Province Police Spokesperson, explained that: “It is true that yesterday afternoon there was an accident involving workers engaged in mining activities.

“Unfortunately, rising underground water killed seven people, and three others were injured and are receiving medical care from doctors.”

IP Ngirabakunzi added: “The public is always advised to be vigilant in mining areas and to avoid entering without protective gear. They should also avoid accessing closed mines, for they pose a high risk of accidents.”
