Africa-Press – Rwanda. Team Rwanda rider Moise Mugisha was all smiles when he saw his family cheering on him from while heading to Rubavu from Musanze in Stage 3.
The 28-year-old stopped in Busogo to embrace his family which was among hundreds who were on the street to support him. Photos of him kissing his twin babies also marked an emotional moment which led the headlines of the race.
Mugisha told Times Sport that he had to stop a bit mid-race and share such a light moment with a family whose support doubled his motivation during the cycling race.
“When the family supports what you are doing, especially in cycling, you can’t bypass them without greeting them. And that can only be done by a professional who knows what it is and what he is doing,” he said.
“It is something I did with all my heart because, when I saw them, I got emotional and I stopped to greet them and then continued the race as usual.”
Mugisha, a former winner of the 2020 Grand Prix Chantal Biya and the 2022 Tour du Cameroun, said he wants make cycling a family tradition which his kids can inherit and follow his footsteps in the future.
“That is the reason they brought them to watch, because every time I come from training, one of them puts on my glasses and the other wears my helmet. They are always playing around with the bicycle,” he noted.
Mugisha expressed that seeing his family during the race provided an additional boost of energy and motivation as his family is at the forefront of everything he does.
Tour Du Rwanda, running from February 23 to March 2, will cover 840.6 km in seven stages. The race has attracted a total of 15 teams.
