Nyabihu embezzlement case goes to prosecution

Africa-Press – Rwanda. Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has said it submitted to the National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA) the case of 14 Nyabihu District officials who are accused of embezzlement.

The suspects, who include the Executive Secretary of Nyabihu District, David Mugiraneza, procurement officers, executive secretaries of sectors, representatives of Ibuka, have been in custody since October 6.

“The case files were submitted at NPPA,” RIB spokesperson Thierry Murangira told The New Times on Saturday, October 25.

The officials and private contractors are accused of misuse of funds meant for renovating at least 17 homes of survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in seven sectors.

“The suspects, at various occasions, signed documents confirming the receipt of construction materials that were never delivered, while some materials that were received did not meet required standards,” RIB said on October 7.

Embezzlement attracts a sentence of up to ten years in prison and a fine of two to five times the value of the embezzled funds or destroyed property.
