Kayonza schools lead in A-Level national exams

Africa-Press – Rwanda. Schools based in Kayonza District have emerged as top performers in the Advanced Level national examinations with a pass rate of 96.9 per cent, according to results released by the Ministry of Education on Monday, September 1.

The announcement was made at the Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB) headquarters, where officials highlighted improved performance in the exams. The national pass rate rose to 89.1 per cent, up from 78.6 per cent last year.

Kirehe came second with a pass rate of 95.6 per cent, after recording the highest pass rates in both the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) and O-Level results released on August 19. Rulindo followed with 94.9 per cent, Ngoma 93.8 per cent, Nyamasheke 93.6 per cent, Nyanza 93.5 per cent, and Ruhango 93.1 per cent.

The lowest performing districts were Kamonyi with 85.0 per cent, Nyarugenge 87.1 per cent, and Gatsibo, Rutsiro, and Karongi each with 88.6 per cent.

A total of 106,418 candidates registered for the exams, with 106,079 sitting. Of these, 105,997 were graded, and 94,409 passed, representing the overall 89.1 per cent pass rate, according to the Director General of the National Examinations and School Inspection Authority (NESA), Bernard Bahati.

Minister of Education Joseph Nsengimana attributed the 10.5 per cent increase in the pass rate to the remedial programme introduced earlier this year, alongside other support initiatives. He said the results reflect the ability of students when given consistent guidance.

“I thank the teachers and parents who supported students in preparing for the exams. The success we have seen also reflects the impact of the remedial programme that began on January 1 and continued throughout the preparation period. The students have performed well, showing they are truly capable,” Nsengimana said.

He added that the timely release of results is aimed at ensuring a smooth transition for both candidates who qualified for university and those who need to repeat.
