Africa-Press – Rwanda. President Paul Kagame received the letters of credence from Gao Wenqi, the new Ambassador of China to Rwanda.
Wenqi replaces Wang Xuekun, who concluded his three-year tour of duty in March.
Rwanda and China have had diplomatic relations for 5o years.
The relations span several areas of cooperation, such as trade, education, healthcare, and infrastructure, among others.
Rwanda’s export to China grew from $39 million (over Rwf54 billion in 2018 to $131 million (over 180 billion) in 2023, according to the Ministry of Trade. Over the last five years, trade between Rwanda and China has grown from $300 million to $550 million.
The current bilateral cooperation agreement between Rwanda and China involves projects worth $600 million, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning said in September 2024.
Notable projects supported by China include the extension of IPRC Musanze, the 54-kilometre Kigali Urban Road Upgrading Project, the upgrading works of the 66-kilometre Huye-Kibeho-Munini-Ngoma Road Project and the Sonatubes-Gahanga road (Airport Expressway Road).
Ongoing projects include the Masaka Hospital Renovation and Expansion Project in Kicukiro District, the Nyabarongo II Hydropower Plant Project, and the Smart Education Project.
