Africa-Press – Rwanda. Golfers Mary Mwangi and Rugema Ngarambe emerged victorious at the sixth edition of the Rwanda Summer Golf Tournament, held on Friday, September 5, at the Falcon Golf and Country Club on the scenic shores of Lake Muhazi in Rwamagana District.

The annual competition, organised in partnership with I&M Bank (Rwanda) Plc, returned just two months after the nine-hole course underwent major renovations, further cementing its status as one of the most attractive golfing venues in the country.

This year’s edition drew 30 golfers who competed across men’s and women’s divisions, grouped into three handicap brackets (0–9, 10–18, and 19–28), along with a senior category.

In the women’s category, Mwangi produced an impressive performance to edge out tough competition, carding 68 Nett to claim the title while Kenya’s Gacheri Mutema emerged runner-up with 70 Nett.

“For women, golf is a clear path to connect. I enjoy it, but I’m also building friendships that could shape the next chapter of my life. I encourage other ladies to make this sport part of their interests,” said Gacheri.

In men’s category, Ngarambe delivered a composed display in the handicap 10–28 bracket, clinching the victory narrowly ahead of runner-up Paul Rwigamba

In the men’s elite handicap 0–9 category, Sanday Kabarebe set the day’s highlight by establishing a good record, making him the standout performer despite being the only competitor in his bracket.

The senior category saw Dr. Charles Gahima climb the podium as top performer after defeating Augustine Ntazinda (69 Nett).

Gahima, who has now participated in the past six editions, praised the tournament’s consistency and its ability to challenge players each year.

“For me, playing golf is not just about winning. For us senior players, even participating contributes to a healthier and longer life. Looking ahead, we are committed to sharing our skills with the younger generation of golfers,” Gahima said.

Iddy Rugamba, the Chief Corporate Affairs & Company Secretary at I&M Bank (Rwanda) Plc, emphasized the sponsor’s commitment to the sport.

“We are thrilled to be part of the Rwanda Summer Golf organized by Falcon Golf Club. The energy we noticed on the course reflected not only the passion for the game but also the growing golfing culture in Rwanda,” he said.

“We are committed to supporting the growth of golf in Rwanda and look forward to more exciting collaborations that will continue driving this growth and strengthening our partnership with the golfing communities in Rwanda and in the region.”

Since its inception in 2020, the Rwanda Summer Golf Tournament has provided free golf training to 10 local youths from Rwamagana each year, with a strong emphasis on encouraging more girls than boys.

Participants are aged between 15 and 21, with the long-term goal of nurturing a new generation of golfers in Rwanda.
