Rwanda delivered a commanding performance to defeat 2024 champions Uganda in the eighth matchup by five wickets, concluding the group stage of the 2025 Kwibuka women’s T20 tournament held at Gahanga Cricket Stadium on Thursday, and securing first place heading into the semi-finals.
Rwanda won the toss to bowl first. Their decision paid off, as they managed to restrict Uganda to 119 runs, taking six wickets in the process. The Rwandan bowlers maintained composure and discipline throughout, preventing Uganda from building a massive total.
Chasing a target of 120 runs, Rwanda got off to a strong start during the power play, scoring 46 runs in the first six overs. This early momentum proved crucial in narrowing the gap set by Uganda.
Rwanda completed the chase in 18.4 overs, reaching 120 runs with five wickets down. The result not only handed them a memorable victory over the title holders but also positioned them as the team to beat in this year’s edition of the tournament.
Henriette Ishimwe was named the Player of the Match after contributing an unbeaten 33 runs and bowling four overs, taking three wickets for 23 runs.
In the other group stage fixtures, Brazil claimed a convincing eight-wicket win over Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone set a modest total of 85/8 in their 20 overs, which Brazil chased down with ease, reaching 87/2 in just 13.5 overs.
Zimbabwe secured a 30-run victory against Malawi, defending their total as Malawi was restricted to 95/9 while chasing. Nyasha Gwanzura starred for Zimbabwe with a well-rounded performance, scoring 34 runs off 37 balls and taking 2 wickets for just 11 runs in three overs.
Meanwhile, Tanzania dominated Cameroon with a commanding 119-run win. After posting a solid 172, the Tanzanian bowling unit dismissed Cameroon for only 53 in 18.2 overs. Tabu Saidi Omary was instrumental in the win, delivering four economical overs, conceding just 13 runs, and claiming four wickets.
