Volleyball: Police, APR WVC dominate Game 1 of finals

Africa-Press – Rwanda. Police VC and APR WVC made strong statements in Game 1 of the men’s and women’s finals, respectively, both securing convincing straight-sets victories on Wednesday at Petit Stade.

Police VC defeated Rwanda Energy Group (REG) 3–0 (25–18, 25–21, 25–23), while APR WVC swept past Kepler WVC 3–0 (25–16, 25–20, 25–21). The matches drew a packed crowd, including Sports Minister Nelly Mukazayire.

Police VC set the tone early, applying relentless pressure in the opening set and denying REG any rhythm. Their game plan focused on neutralizing REG’s key left attacker, Nicholas Matue, and it proved effective.

Police raced to a double-digit lead before comfortably closing the set 25–18.

In the second set, REG head coach Benon Mugisha attempted to reshape his attack by introducing Madol Ayang Marker to support Merci Gisubizo. However, the Sudanese attacker struggled with precision, committing several unforced errors that handed Police crucial points.

Guided by Elphas Makuto’s leadership, Police capitalized to claim the set 25–21.

REG’s hopes further diminished in the third set when right hitter Sam Engwau was forced off with an ankle injury, weakening their attacking options. Police maintained control to seal the match 25–23.

“We’re more focused on our own game than reading our opponents’ tactics. At this level, you have to be clear and determined about what you want, or someone else will take it from you,” said Police veteran middle blocker Placide Sibomana after the win.

APR WVC swept past Kepler WVC 3–0 (25–16, 25–20, 25–21).

In the women’s finals, debutants Kepler WVC—led by standout performer Binta Fatoumata—were outclassed by a dominant APR side, who secured a straight-sets victory (25–16, 25–20, 25–21).

In the bronze medal matches, Kepler VC bounced back to claim their first win, defeating Gisagara VC in four sets (21–25, 25–17, 25–22, 25–15).

APR WVC swept past Kepler WVC 3–0 (25–16, 25–20, 25–21).

Earlier in the women’s category, Police WVC cruised past Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) in straight sets (25–18, 25–21, 25–15).

The finals and third-place series will resume on Saturday, April 4.
