Africa-Press – Seychelles. The hulk Andromache drifted onto Sèche Island on Saturday.
A press release issued yesterday by the Seychelles Ports Authority said this was during a joint operation between the Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority (SMSA), Seychelles Ports Authority (SPA), the Seychelles Coastguard, and the department of Environment to prepare the privately owned vessel located at Queenie Bay, ex St Anne, to be towed and sunk at the dumping site near Sèche Island. This was a coordinated effort to protect the environment, said the press release.
“However, the weather deteriorated prior the completion of the operation and the towline to Andromache broke causing the vessel to drift onto Sèche Island,” it added.
According to the communique, due to the weather conditions and tides on Saturday evening, the operation was suspended to protect the lives of those engaged in this delicate operation. A plan was developed to complete the operation yesterday, in more favourable conditions to reduce the risk to those involved, it concluded.
