Africa-Press – Seychelles. Canadian singer Celine Dion uploaded a rare post about her health and autoimmune disorder on Instagram for Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) Awareness Day. The message came with a picture of her and her sons.
Dion was diagnosed with the rare neurological condition in 2022.
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, “SPS is a rare autoimmune neurological disorder that most commonly causes muscle stiffness and painful spasms that come and go, and can worsen over time. Some people experience other symptoms such as an unsteady gait, double vision or slurred speech.”
“Today, the world recognises International SPS Awareness Day,” Dion wrote in a post on Saturday.
“As many of you know, in the fall of 2022, I was diagnosed with SPS.”
She continued:
“I am deeply grateful for the love and support from my kids, family, team and all of you.
“I want to send my encouragement and support to all those around the world that have been affected by SPS. I want you to know you can do it! We can do it,” she wrote, signing off with “Love Celine xx”.
In the image posted with the caption, Dion is with her three sons: René-Charles and twins Nelson and Eddy.
Dion is hoping to raise awareness of her disorder with an upcoming documentary I Am: Celine Dion.
In May 2023, she cancelled numerous shows scheduled for the rest of last year and 2024 due to her condition.
“This last couple of years has been such a challenge for me; the journey from discovering my condition to learning how to live with and manage it but not to let it define me [sic],” she said in a statement at the time.
“As the road to resuming my performing career continues, I have realised how much I have missed it, being able to see my fans,” she added.
“During this absence, I decided I wanted to document this part of my life, to try to raise awareness of this little-known condition, to help others who share this diagnosis,” she said.
The My Heart Will Go On singer also made a surprise appearance at the 2024 Grammys, where she presented the Album of the Year award. She handed the honour over to Taylor Swift, who won for Midnights.
“You look beautiful. When I say I’m happy to be here, I really mean it from my heart,” the Canadian star said to the crowd.
“Those who have been blessed enough to be here at the Grammy Awards must never take for granted the tremendous love and joy that music brings to our lives and to people all around the world.”
