Africa-Press – Seychelles. With the increase in utility tariffs in Seychelles set by the Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) for January 15, and to coincide with the National Cut Your Energy Costs Day, on January 10, it is paramount now more than ever that proper education over how to save every cent spreads throughout Seychelles.

Although the day is originally meant for cold countries where the electricity bills during the winter months increase in order to be able to keep warm, National Cut Your Energy Costs Day is your opportunity to take a look at your life and your home, and find ways of reducing how much energy you are using.

Seychelles NATION brings a compilation of past advertisements and articles from PUC, on how to efficiently save electricity while also scouring and compiling the best sites to find out how to save every cent.

In a recent post from two years ago posted on PUC’s Facebook page, there were five suggestions. The first is to turn off lights when not in use and to opt for Light-emitting diode (LED), invest in energy efficient appliances, not leave electrical appliances on standby mode as they will continue to consume electricity, avoid opening deep freezers and refrigerators for longer than necessary and finally, electrical appliances such as air conditioning, and water heaters are what use the most electricity and therefore will be reflected onto the bill.

An article from Seychelles NATION released on July 2013, suggested that 60 percent of all the power used by a computer is consumed by the monitor alone and therefore if turning off the entire computer is a not choice, then to at least turn off the monitor.

The next thing to do is take a look at your appliances. Old and inefficient appliances are not energy efficient, and can result in some extremely high bills, so you definitely want to assess the cost of your current appliances and see if it would save you money in the long run to replace it. Refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, clothes washers, and every other unit in your home can result in some really high costs.

What is important to realise is that PUC has made certain changes to keep up with the rapidly developing technologies such as installing a 33kV in the southern region of Mahé which would allow residents and businesses to have access to a more robust, reliable, and efficient electricity network.

In conclusion, while it may be difficult to accept the unfortunate truth that electricity bills will rise due to factors such as increase in fuel, to make the day to day operations work more efficiently, one could take solace in the fact that by observing and being slightly more careful about how you use your electricity, you may be able to keep your bill at an acceptable rate.

Accompanying the article is a list of the 400 Kwh Consumption, 500 Kwh consumption and 600 Kwh consumption domestic customers (30A Breaker) with the existing and new tariffs along with the percentage increase.
