SHRC Message for International Human Rights Day 2025

Africa-Press – Seychelles. As Seychelles joins the world in commemorating the International Human Rights Day 2025, the Seychelles Human Rights Commission calls upon every citizen and institution to reaffirm our shared commitment to the dignity and equal worth of all people.

“This year’s United Nations theme, ‘Our Everyday Essentials’, reminds us that human rights are not abstract ideals; they are the foundation of daily life. They speak directly to our fundamental needs for food, shelter, safety, autonomy, justice, and the conditions that allow us to live with dignity.

“As UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has urged, we must ‘reconnect with human rights, remembering that they are about people – about their needs, wants, fears, hopes and aspirations.

“Here at home, we mark Human Rights Day under our national theme: ‘Safeguarding Human Dignity: The Right of Every Citizen, the Duty of Institutions’. Dignity is the inherent and inalienable value each of us possesses simply by being human. It is the foundation of all our rights, protected in Chapter III of our Constitution and affirmed in the Preamble, where ‘We the People’ committed ourselves to building a just, humane, and democratic society where no one is left behind.

“On this Human Rights Day, the SHRC reaffirms its commitment to promoting equality, justice, and freedom; strengthening institutional accountability; and ensuring that every individual in Seychelles can enjoy their inherent and inalienable rights.

“Let us continue working together, citizens, communities, and institutions, to build a nation where dignity is respected in practice, not only in principle, and where human rights guide our daily actions, decisions, and aspirations.”
