Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Zainab Iyamide Joaque of the Awoko newspaper was named Journalist of the Year at the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) Media Awards 2024/25.

The awards ceremony took place on Tuesday, May 9, 2025, at the Bintumani Hotel in Freetown.

The SLAJ Media Awards are held annually to celebrate journalism that demonstrates excellence, courage, and public service in promoting democracy and development.

The Journalist of the Year Award was funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sierra Leone. In a statement on their social media platform, UNDP Sierra Leone congratulated Joaque, stating: “Huge congratulations to Zainab Iyamide Joaque of awokonewspaper for winning UNDPSierraLeone’s funded Journalist of the Year Award at #SLAJMediaAwards2025.
