Sierra Leone Parliament Summons Health Minister Over Mpox Outbreak

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Parliament of Sierra Leone has summoned the Minister of Health to brief Members of Parliament on the country’s preparedness to contain the ongoing Monkeypox (Mpox) outbreak.

The session is scheduled for Tuesday, 13th May 2025, at 10:00 AM in the Chamber of Parliament.

This session follows the last adjournment and is in line with the provisions of the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Act No. 6) of 1991. During the session, the Minister of Health will explain the health system’s response to the outbreak, addressing any concerns and providing updates on the steps taken to prevent the further spread of the virus. Members of Parliament will be given the opportunity to question the Minister about the state of the health system and the measures being implemented to contain the virus.

According to the latest data, Sierra Leone has recorded a total of 1,815 confirmed Mpox cases, with 1,433 still active. A total of 140 new cases have been reported, while 7 patients have recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries to 371.

The outbreak has also resulted in 11 deaths. The virus has affected both males and females, with 969 male and 846 female confirmed cases. The Western Urban and Western Rural areas remain the most affected, with Western Urban alone accounting for 1,200 of the total cases.

Interested members of the public are encouraged to attend, and media houses, including SLBC TV/Radio, have been requested to broadcast the proceedings live.
