SLPP Politician Threatens Court Action Against Party Over Alleged Election Manipulation

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Abu Kamara, widely known as “Abu SLPP,” a leading contender for the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Bombali District Chairmanship, has threatened to take legal action if the party fails to overturn the results of the May 12 district executive elections, which he claims were marred by irregularities.

Kamara, a prominent political figure in Makeni, alleges that he was deliberately sidelined in the election process. Sources say that while other candidates were given thousands of membership cards—a prerequisite for voting—he was denied access to purchase and distribute them to his supporters.

Africa 24 Newspaper reports that prior to the elections, the SLPP headquarters in Freetown reportedly sent 20,000 membership cards to then-District Chairman Alhaji Mohamed Siaffa (aka Mogamba) for sale at Le 20 each. However, insiders claim Kamara was systematically excluded from obtaining the cards despite repeated complaints to party officials.

On election day, tensions escalated at the Old Town Hall in Makeni when the Regional Returning Officer, Abu Abdulai Koroma, announced only four out of five candidates as eligible for the chairmanship race, omitting Kamara’s name. The move sparked an uproar among delegates, forcing a temporary halt in proceedings. Witnesses reported heavy police presence, preventing potential unrest.

Supporters of Kamara allege voter intimidation, claiming many delegates left without casting ballots. Despite filing petitions with the Regional Election Complaints Committee (RECC) and the SLPP National Executive, Kamara says his grievances have been ignored.

“If this injustice is not corrected, we will have no choice but to seek redress in court,” Kamara declared. His supporters remain adamant that he was the preferred candidate and accuse party officials of manipulating the process to favor his opponents.

The SLPP has yet to issue an official response to the allegations.
