Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Leonean international defender Osman Kakay and his club, Boavista Futebol Clube, have been relegated from the Portuguese Primeira Liga following the conclusion of the 2024–25 season.
Boavista finished 18th in the league standings, marking a disappointing end to their 18-year spell in Portugal’s top division.
Kakay, who joined Boavista as a free agent in February 2025 after parting ways with English side Queens Park Rangers, made six appearances for the club during the campaign. His arrival was seen as a defensive boost, but Boavista struggled to find form throughout the season.
A managerial change in April saw experienced coach Stuart Baxter take charge in a bid to inspire a turnaround. Despite a brief resurgence and a spirited push in the final fixtures, Boavista failed to secure the points needed for survival.
The relegation is a significant blow for the club and for Kakay, who had hoped to revitalize his European career in Portugal. Boavista will now prepare for life in the Liga Portugal 2, with uncertainty surrounding the future of several players, including the Sierra Leonean defender. Kakay’s next move will be closely watched as he considers his options.
