Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. President Julius Maada Bio has officially appointed Mr. Abdul Aziz as the new Auditor General of Sierra Leone, succeeding Lara Taylor-Pearce, who was suspended indefinitely in 2022. Before this appointment, Aziz served as the acting Auditor General.
Taylor-Pearce’s suspension followed a letter from the President’s office instructing the Attorney General to establish a tribunal to investigate the Audit Service Sierra Leone for potential professional misconduct. Despite her consistent release of critical audit reports regarding the management of state resources by both previous and current governments, Taylor-Pearce claimed she was never informed of the specific allegations against her or the scope of the tribunal’s investigation.
The tribunal, which also investigated her deputy, Tamba Momoh, was convened after their suspension in November 2021. After a thorough two-year inquiry, the tribunal submitted its findings to the President in June 2024. On July 9, 2024, the government announced the dismissal of both Taylor-Pearce and Momoh, a decision made in line with Section 137(7)(a) of the Constitution, which allows the President to remove the Auditor General based on the tribunal’s recommendations.
With Abdul Aziz now appointed, the Audit Service faces a critical transition as it continues to navigate the challenges surrounding accountability and transparency in Sierra Leone.
