Freetown Council Engages Youth to Clean Flood Areas

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Freetown City Council (FCC) has mobilized more than 1,000 young people in a major flood mitigation initiative, clearing silt and garbage from critical drainage channels across the city.

Over the past two weeks, an average of 50 youths per community have been working daily to clean gutters and waterways in flood-prone areas. The effort, supported by FCC councillors, aims to promote community ownership and long-term sustainability in flood prevention.

Key locations where flood mitigation work has been completed include Mayenkineh in Calaba Town, Taylor Street at Kissy Old Road, Guard Street Market, Car Wash in Tengbeh Town, Congo Cross, Signal Hill dump sites, Macauley Street, Wallace Johnson Street, and several FCC-managed markets.

The initiative is part of FCC’s “Dorti Mus Go” campaign, launched on June 27, 2025, to improve sanitation and flood management. The campaign enforces new sanitation bylaws, promotes registered waste service providers, and implements annual flood prevention activities.

Funding for this phase comes from FCC’s own-source revenue, Irish Aid, the Chinese Embassy, the Road Maintenance Fund Administration (RMFA), and other partners.

The FCC commended its Climate Action and Disaster Management Committee, Sanitation Committee, and Disaster Risk Management Unit for their oversight and implementation of the project.

Residents are urged to avoid dumping waste in gutters and to register with approved waste service providers for proper waste disposal. The FCC continues to push for a cleaner, flood-resilient Freetown.
