Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Leone’s Energy Sector Lead, Kandeh Yumkella has addressed speculations regarding his political future amidst rumors of interest in the 2028 Presidential flagbrearer title for the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).
Yumkella, who previously served as a member of parliament and is currently serving as the Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security under President Julius Maada Bio’s government contested for the presidency of Sierra Leone in 2018 but garnered 6.9% of the vote.
In 2023, Yumkella did not run for Presidency but rather signed an agreement with President Julius Maada Bio to support his re-election. There are speculations that this agreement also includes a clause stating that Bio would support Yumkella to run for President in 2028.
Addressed questions surrounding his political ambitions in a recent TV interview, Yumkella stated that his current focus remains on national development—specifically, revitalizing Sierra Leone’s struggling energy sector.
He emphasized that he is fully committed to achieving critical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in the sector. He assured the public that his top priority is delivering reliable and sustainable energy solutions that will support the country’s long-term growth.
“My ambition right now is to power this country—not just politically, but literally,” he stated, highlighting his dedication to tangible results over political speculation.
