Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh has expressed his delight at the growing number of young people from both the All People’s Congress (APC) and the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) aspiring to lead his country.
Motivated by the aspirations of young people, Sengeh took to his Facebook page, stating that his joy comes not from being designated a role model or source of inspiration, but from a change in what voters now expect from their leaders.
According to the Chief Minister, the public now expects leaders to demonstrate effort, integrity, service, people-orientedness, delivery, transparency, accessibility, technical skill, and energy.
“By the grace of God and the support of President Bio, I have set a new standard and I’m thrilled others aspire for that,” Sengeh posted.
Sengeh’s words reflect the new era as young people become more interested in politics ahead of upcoming elections, with calls for capable and people-centred leadership.
Sengeh, along with other young politicians, are regarded as a leader with him being tipped to run for the presidency under the Sierra Leone People’s Party after the end of President Julius Maada Bio’s tenure in 2028.
The youngest leader to have ever ruled Sierra Leone was Captain Valentine Strasser who seized power through a military coup at the age of 25 in 1992.
Copying the examples of Ousmane Sonko of Burkina Faso, Ibrahima Traore and Diomaye Faye of Senegal, political analysts have stressed the importance of tapping into the ability of young people.
