Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources (MMMR) and the National Minerals Agency (NMA) have broken their silence on widely circulating reports of a deadly mining incident in Kono District, stating that there is no official confirmation of any loss of life.
In a press release dated October 31, 2025, the government agencies addressed the public concern and grief over an alleged event at Kumoroh, Nimikoro Chiefdom.
While acknowledging the shared accounts, authorities clarified that any miners involved in such an event would have been operating illegally.
The statement emphasized that the individuals allegedly involved were “operating in defiance of established laws and safety protocols.”
It further detailed that the MMMR and NMA, alongside security forces and the Environment Protection Agency, have repeatedly engaged with communities to warn of the severe risks of illegal mining and have made numerous attempts to halt such activities.
According to the release, these miners have “persistently refused to cooperate and have resisted all attempts to stop their illegal operations.”
Crucially, the government labeled reports of fatalities as “misinformation,” noting that while investigations are ongoing, “there is no confirmation from authorities of any such incident and/or loss of lives at this point.”
The agencies reaffirmed their commitment to working with security forces to investigate the situation and eradicate illegal mining, which they stated endangers lives and causes extensive environmental damage. The public was strongly urged to refrain from engaging in these illegal practices.
