Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Government of Sierra Leone, at a special ceremony held at the Freetown Cheshire Home on Racecourse Road, Cline Town, the Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, served as the keynote speaker during the handover of assistive devices to disability institutions under the Sierra Leone Digital Transformation Project.
Organized by the Ministry of Communication, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI) with support from the World Bank.
The Minister of Communication, Technology, and Innovation was also in attendance. She reaffirmed her ministry’s commitment to expanding digital access and promoting inclusive growth.
Also, the Minister of Communication noted that this partnership with the World Bank underscores the government’s dedication to using technology as a force for equality and opportunity. She highlighted the importance of continuous training and innovation in ensuring that digital transformation reaches every community.
Furthermore, four key disability-focused organizations received assistive devices to support their educational and training programs: Dorothy Springer Trust (DST), Educational Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Bombali School for the Blind, and Opportunity Training Center.
The devices are expected to enhance learning, rehabilitation, and accessibility for people with visual and physical impairments, empowering them to fully participate in the digital economy.
In his keynote address, Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh praised the initiative as a practical demonstration of the government’s belief that “technology must work for everyone.” He emphasized that inclusivity is at the heart of national development and that empowering people with disabilities through digital tools is central to Sierra Leone’s human capital agenda.
One of the key beneficiary institutions, the Dorothy Springer Trust, also showcased its Community-Based Inclusive Development (CBID) Training Programme during the event. The program offers a range of courses, including Inclusive Education, Mental Health, Rehabilitation, Disability Rights and Legal Framework, and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights, all aimed at strengthening inclusion and equality at the community level.
