Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) has commenced hearing a formal complaint filed by Former Vice President Alhaji Sam Sumana against the All-People’s Congress (APC) Party over what he describes as a discriminatory clause in the party’s constitution.
In his petition, Sumana argues that a specific provision within the APC Constitution unfairly disqualifies him and others from contesting for leadership positions within the party, an action he believes violates the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone, which guarantees every citizen the right to participate in political activities and seek elective office.
The former vice president is urging the Commission to direct the APC to amend its constitution in order to bring it into alignment with the country’s supreme law and uphold democratic inclusivity.
During the preliminary hearing held earlier today, PPRC officials listened to representations from both parties and outlined procedures for subsequent sittings. The Commission reaffirmed its role as an independent arbiter in ensuring fairness, legality, and compliance within the internal operations of all registered political parties.
The case has already generated widespread public interest, as it touches on constitutional rights, intra-party democracy, and leadership eligibility ahead of future political contests.
Observers say the outcome of the hearing could set a significant precedent for internal party governance and political reform across Sierra Leone’s multi-party system.
The PPRC is expected to continue hearings in the coming days before issuing its decision on the matter.
