Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Alhaji Manika Kamara was elected as the new President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) during the Association’s congress held on Saturday evening at the Bintumani Conference Centre in Freetown.

Manika secured a total of 309 votes, comfortably defeating his close opponent Mustapha M. K. Sesay who polled 153 votes.

The election, held earlier today, was closely followed by journalists and media practitioners across the country, marking a significant moment for the future direction of the Association.

Manika’s victory comes after years of servitude as Assistant Secretary General of the Association and later Secretary General.

Meanwhile, his close contender, Sesay is also a seasoned journalist and former Commissioner at the Independent Media Commission (IMC).

Supporters of both camps remain calm after the results were announced on Saturday evening highlighting the importance of unity among journalists in the country.
