Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Former senior APC member Alpha Kanu has officially joined the ruling SLPP.
Speaking during an online media discussion, he confirmed that he now holds an SLPP party membership card and believes the APC will not win the 2028 elections.
Kanu, who previously served as a government spokesman and held several ministerial roles under former President Ernest Bai Koroma, was known for his long involvement in the APC. He served as Minister of Information and Communications, and also worked in the mining and presidential affairs ministries.
He said he left the APC after being denied the chance to contest for the flagbearer position. According to him, the SLPP welcomed him and offered a space where, in his words, nobody will be left behind. He described the SLPP as a party working to include more people in the government.
Kanu stated that the APC will not win the 2028 elections. However, he added that the SLPP will draw them into government so no one is left out.
He also said he believes President Julius Maada Bio is doing a good job leading the country. Kanu explained that he does not miss the APC and now feels happy and respected in the SLPP. He said being driven from the APC showed they no longer wanted him, and that he is comfortable with where he is now.
His move follows decades of involvement with the APC, where he had wide visibility and influence, especially in the northern region.
The switch has sparked online attention, with some wondering whether more members from the opposition will make similar moves.
Kanu said his focus now is on supporting national development and being part of a political space that brings more people together.
