Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has praised the All Peoples Congress (APC) for its role in the Independent Management and Functional Review of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) and other Election Management Bodies (EMBs).

The President received the comprehensive report at State House, which was produced by the Public Sector Reform Unit (PSRU) in collaboration with the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).

The report outlines key challenges facing the ECSL and offers 85 actionable recommendations aimed at improving the effectiveness and credibility of the Commission’s operations in future elections.

In his remarks, President Bio acknowledged the contributions of various stakeholders involved in the review process, including civil society organizations, the media, youth and women’s groups, EMBs, interreligious leaders, and Paramount Chiefs.

President Bio emphasized the importance of national dialogue and inclusion, stating, “I have always taken ownership of Sierra Leone’s challenges as a shared responsibility.”

He reflected on his past efforts to foster peace during the civil conflict, recalling his dialogues with rebel leaders and his commitment to sustainable peace, gender equality, and justice system reforms.

The President also asserted that the call for electoral reform was made during the State Opening of the Sixth Parliament on August 3, 2023, where he proposed the establishment of an independent mechanism to review Sierra Leone’s electoral framework and the performance of the ECSL.
