Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Freetown is expected to face power cuts starting June 12, 2025, after Karpowership announced it will stop supplying electricity to the capital due to unpaid bills.
The Ministry of Energy confirmed in a statement today that it received a disconnection notice from Karpowership on May 28. The company said it will switch off most of its power supply to the city at midnight on June 12.
Talks had been going on for the past few months between the Ministry, led by Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, and Karpowership to extend the current contract for up to one year. But those discussions have not led to an agreement so far.
Although the main supply will be cut, Karpowership has promised to keep sending 6 megawatts of electricity to support hospitals and other essential services.
The Ministry said steps are already being taken to reduce the effect of the power cuts. These actions are being carried out under the instruction of President Julius Maada Bio.
According to the Ministry, work is also ongoing at the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) to improve how electricity is managed and delivered. The goal is to keep power steady, affordable, and available to more people in Freetown.
While the public should expect some level of load shedding, the Ministry said it will be planned and managed as carefully as possible.
Residents are being asked to stay patient as the situation is handled.
