APC NRM Clarifies Stance on Party Flagbearership, Refutes Sylvia Blyden’s Claims

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The National Reformation Movement (NRM) today issued a strong clarification regarding its position on the upcoming All People’s Congress (APC) flagbearership race, directly refuting a recent Facebook post by veteran journalist Sylvia Olayinka Blyden.

In a statement released by Kelvin Kamara, Secretary General of the NRM, the movement addressed Blyden’s assertion that Dr. Ibrahim Bangura represents the NRM in what she termed a “flagbearership battle” against Hon. Bai Mahmoud Bangura.

“We wish to categorically state the following: that Dr. Ibrahim Bangura is not a member of the NRM,” Kamara declared. “Any assertion linking him to our movement as a representative or candidate is factually incorrect and misleading.”

Kamara further questioned the logic of Blyden’s claim, noting that Dr. Bangura was previously entrusted by the former party chairman to mediate between the APC and the NRM, a role inconsistent with NRM membership.

The NRM emphasized that it is “not fielding or endorsing any candidate for the upcoming APC flagbearership race.” The movement reiterated its core mission: “to advocate for democratic reforms, internal party unity, constitutionalism, and a transparent political process within the APC and Sierra Leone.”

Kamara also stressed that the NRM is not in conflict with any APC member or stakeholder, including Hon. Bai Mahmoud Bangura or other aspirants, affirming their respect for “the rights of all constitutionally qualified individuals to contest for leadership positions in the party.”

The NRM urged Madam Blyden, whom they described as “a veteran journalist and someone revered within the APC,” to “exercise diligence and responsibility in her public communications, especially when dealing with matters that affect internal party unity and public perception.”

“We therefore urge her to make the necessary corrections and avoid drawing the NRM into political narratives that are not only false but also potentially divisive,” Kamara added.

The statement concluded by advising leaders and their supporters to refrain from associating the movement with specific candidates, asserting that the NRM’s name should not be “used as a weapon to destroy the chances of others.” The NRM affirmed its commitment to supporting reforms and inclusivity within the APC, vowing not to be drawn into “personal or factional battles.”

The NRM called on all party members to remain united and focused on strengthening the APC for future electoral contests.
