Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Government of Sierra Leone spent a remarkable Le4.75 billion on road rehabilitation in 2023, making it the largest single procurement category for the year despite only 58 procurement actions.
This substantial investment highlights the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure amid a challenging fiscal environment.
According to procurement data, road-related infrastructure far surpassed spending in other categories, including Building Construction, which accounted for Le1.41 billion across 44 actions, and Building Maintenance & Small Works, which consumed Le1.54 billion through 157 actions.
The public health sector also received notable funding, with Medical Drugs, Equipment, Consumables & Reagents totaling Le260.5 million across 43 procurements, reflecting ongoing efforts to improve medical services.
Meanwhile, everyday operational expenditures were also significant, with Office Supplies and Stationery totaling Le423.8 million from 480 procurement actions. Additionally, Uniforms, despite only 26 actions, accounted for Le126.1 million, while investments in Solar Equipment & Maintenance reached Le87.6 million through 34 transactions.
In contrast, Agricultural Crops, Inputs & Seeds, crucial for food security, received just Le81 million through 43 procurements, highlighting concerns over the prioritization of administrative costs, such as Printing Services, which drew Le804.9 million over 330 transactions.
These figures provide a clear picture of the government’s fiscal priorities in 2023, focusing heavily on infrastructure development and health investments, while raising questions about efficiency and the allocation of resources.
