Chief Justice Honourable Komba Kamanda on February 4, 2026, officially launched the construction of the York Magistrate’s Court and High Court in the Western Rural District, signaling a new phase in efforts to decentralize the judiciary and bring legal services closer to communities outside Freetown.
Presiding over the sod-turning ceremony, Justice Kamanda emphasized that the judiciary belongs to all Sierra Leoneans and is not reserved for a privileged few. He said the project is part of a broader strategy to improve access to justice for residents of York and surrounding rural areas, who have long faced logistical and financial challenges traveling to the capital to seek legal redress.
“I made a commitment to increasing access to justice for every citizen,” Justice Kamanda told residents of York Village. “Justice is for every citizen and not for a privileged few.”
The Chief Justice described the construction project as more than just a brick-and-mortar initiative. He said it represents a strategic effort to strengthen the effective administration of justice nationwide and to make the judiciary more visible and accessible to all Sierra Leoneans, regardless of their location or social standing.
The launch of the York court facilities is expected to ease the burden on rural communities and enhance the delivery of judicial services, reinforcing the government’s commitment to equitable access to justice throughout the country.
